PRESS RELEASE
Congressman Al Green Hosts Meeting with the National Association of Postal Supervisors Regarding Mail Delivery Delays
(Washington, D.C.) — On Tuesday, January 30, 2024, Congressman Al Green together with representatives from the offices of Rep. Sylvia Garcia and Chair Michael McCaul met with representatives from the National Association of Postal Supervisors (NAPS). NAPS is an organization representing approximately 27,000 active and retired United States Postal Service (USPS) supervisors, managers, and postmasters. The meeting addressed the mail delivery delays within the USPS North Houston and Missouri City Processing and Distribution Centers.
During the meeting, the discussion highlighted the “Delivering for America” plan. This 10-year initiative is intended to enhance the USPS’ efficiency, but, three years into the plan, projections have regrettably fallen short. In particular, High Output Package Sorters (HOPS) that were intended to replace the less efficient Automated Parcel Bundle Sorters (APBS), in the North Houston sorting facility encountered setbacks due to poor planning. The Association’s representatives expressed concern that poor execution of the new machine’s installation led to delayed mail deliveries and a backlog at the North and Southside facilities. Additionally, cost-cutting measures, such as relying on ground transportation coupled with staffing shortages post-Christmas contributed to delays.
In response to the ongoing media coverage, Congressman Al Green stated, “I thank the press for continued coverage of USPS mail delays, especially KHOU 11 for bringing this issue to my attention. The persistent coverage has compelled USPS to address mail delivery delays by bringing in more than 30 additional employees.”
