Friends, during the 2020 campaign, President Biden made a series of promises to enact legislation to cut down on gun violence & the availability of assault weapons. In 2022, a bipartisan coalition managed to pass the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, which contained some common sense reforms related to background checks and Red Flag Laws.
But due to slim margins in Congress and House Republican obstructionism, we haven’t seen the additional proposals regarding assault weapons make it through the halls of power. As a result, 2023 saw an additional 43,000 gun deaths – a clear warning that our leaders need to do more to save lives.
The facts speak for themselves. Last year was the 2nd highest number of mass killings on record, events clearly enabled by the availability of high capacity weapons that assault weapons bans would limit.
By an +11-point margin, voters want President Biden to take powerful action to deal with this ongoing crisis, even if it means using executive orders instead of legislation:
