The cost of living crisis in Australia has now reached critical levels and according to new research [[link removed]], more than 80 per cent of Australians believe the Labor government hasn't done enough to fix the problem.

The Prime Minister famously said that his word was his bond [[link removed]] and on over 100 occasions, before and after the election, both he and the Treasurer gave an iron-clad commitment to keep the legislated Stage 3 tax cuts [[link removed]].

This issue isn’t just about a specific tax promise [[link removed]] – it’s another instance of the erosion and damage [[link removed]] that is done to our democracy when fundamental election promises [[link removed]] are broken.

Labor’s cost of living crisis [[link removed]] is getting worse. Here on the Southern Gold Coast, rental prices continue to rise [[link removed]] while many families are plunged further into debt, spending $200 a week more than they earn - as prices for essential items keep going up [[link removed]]. Over the past year fuel prices jumped 13.9% and electricity rose by 12.7% across Queensland [[link removed]].

Increasingly Australia’s inflation rate is home-grown due to Labor’s poor policy decisions with the International Monetary Fund warning [[link removed]] that the Reserve Bank may have to keep lifting interest rates, with inflation likely to stay too high until 2026.

Despite the difficult economic situation, it was great to be reminded of all the things that unite us as Australians. I was pleased to join with so many local residents enjoying Australia Day [[link removed]] at a number of different events. A big thank you to the amazing Lions Club volunteers [[link removed]] at Burleigh who put on a great BBQ for new Australian citizens. It’s truly an amazing experience each year officiating at local Citizenship ceremonies [[link removed]] when so many people become Australians.

It was also great to spend some time at Tugun Surf Life Saving where they were celebrating their 99th club birthday [[link removed]] as well as Australia Day.

Our local community groups do so much to enrich our lives on the southern Gold Coast and this was clearly evident during the recent clean-up following the intense storm activity on the coast over the past month. A special thanks to organisations including the Gold Coast SES [[link removed]] who have been working so hard across the Christmas and New Year period to help local residents.

Until next month,

Hon Karen Andrews MP
