Important updates on the Kappa Kappa Gamma lawsuits

A lot has happened in the past week. Independent Women’s Law Center is on the frontlines of saving sororities as safe, women’s-only organizations. I want to personally update you on several recent and critical developments in the ongoing legal battle to save Kappa Kappa Gamma, where leadership concocted a male membership policy without giving Kappa women a voice.
First, on Wednesday, the Independent Women’s Law Center filed its final brief in the Tenth Circuit explaining that Kappa Kappa Gamma leadership failed to adhere to their own governing bylaws. These bylaws, which explicitly state “a new member shall be a woman,” were violated when Kappa leadership facilitated a biological male’s initiation into the Gamma Omicron chapter at the University of Wyoming.
Why would a reputable organization violate their own bylaws to elevate men over women?
When asked about this, Kappa leadership not only blatantly ignored the question. They attempted to silence two loyal alumnae, Patsy Levang and Cheryl Tuck-Smith, by removing them from membership.
Both women, proud members of Independent Women’s Network, had their lifetime Kappa membership terminated after more than 50 years of service. And as of Friday, Levang, Tuck-Smith, and a cadre of other Kappa alumnae have filed a lawsuit, with IWLC as co-counsel, against Kappa’s governing officials for their violations.
At IWLC, we believe in the preservation of women’s spaces, which have provided countless benefits to the millions of women who have sought them. We believe the next generation of women deserves these benefits, and deserves a voice in preserving our own futures.
