John, I want to tell you about the person who inspired me to enter public service: my dad.

Mel Feuer served in World War II as a ball turret gunner on a B-24 bomber. He had enlisted to fight the Nazis after learning about the ongoing horrors of the Holocaust in Europe. In April 1944, Nazis shot his plane down over France. He was captured and spent a year in the infamous Stalag 17 prison camp.

In 1945, the Nazis forced Mel and his fellow Prisoners of War to march across Austria as they fled the advancing Russian army. With a badly injured foot, Mel dragged himself forward until American troops liberated him on May 3, 1945.

Through this experience, my father decided to dedicate his life to serving others. He became a beloved schoolteacher, principal, and dedicated volunteer in public schools.

In a very real sense, my father showed me the way. He taught me how precious life is, and how fragile. And he taught me to pursue the most important work in the world, which for me is tackling our most significant public issues and protecting our most vulnerable neighbors.

Although my dad passed away in 2015 at the age of 92, I'll never forget the lessons he taught about responsibility, honesty, and looking out for others.

Following the principles and values I learned from my dad, I found my calling as a public servant — as the leader of Bet Tzedek/The House of Justice, as an LA City Councilmember, CA State Assemblymember, and twice-elected LA City Attorney. Now, I’m seeking to continue his legacy as our community’s representative in Congress.

Eighty years after my dad fought Nazis in Europe, we're facing forces perilously close to fascism here at home. It's more critical than ever to have leaders who stand up for our democracy, civil rights, LGBTQ+ rights, and women’s reproductive rights — and against dangerous efforts to divide our country and demonize our neighbors.

Throughout my career, I’ve stood up to big oil and tobacco companies, gun manufacturers, environmental polluters, predatory lenders, and big insurance. And I’ve stood up to Donald Trump and will continue to do so — to save our democracy — if I am fortunate enough to be elected to succeed Adam Schiff in Congress.

I'm proud to share my father's story as part of this campaign — and with your support, we can reach even more CA-30 voters with our message that the urgency of this moment demands a proven national leader who will stand up for democracy and tackle homelessness, gun violence, the climate crisis and more with skill and integrity. Can you chip in today before our urgent end-of-month deadline? [[link removed]]
