Hi John,

In some parts of the world, something as annoying as a mosquito bite can
have deadly consequences. 15.8 million people have died from malaria since
2000, the debilitating virus delivered by that tiny bite.

People have tried everything to beat it, including insecticide-treated
nets and indoor residual spraying. But those mosquitos and the virus that
many carry are resilient. Until now.

A new vaccine recommended by WHO in 2021 is now being administered to
children through routine immunization programs in Cameroon as we speak.

This is a landmark moment in the fight against a disease that is one of
the biggest killers of young children in Africa, costing the lives of half
a million children under the age of five each year.

The road to get here was not without its bumps; the vaccine spent three
decades in the making but also shows what is possible when we match
science and innovation and investment and political will. The vaccine is
not a silver bullet. Similar to a COVID-19 or flu vaccine, prevention
methods also help stop the spread.

What’s next? The vaccine was trialed in Ghana, Kenya and Malawi and roll
out is expected to continue there. Later this year Niger, Liberia, Sierra
Leone and the Democratic Republic of the Congo will start to receive
doses, then hopefully more countries after that.
