WE ACT's Summer Movies
Join us at West Harlem Piers Park next week for WE ACT's annual Black & Green Summer Movies series. And be sure to arrive early because we will be playing trivia and giving out prizes both days. Plus, we'll have a panel discussion on gentrification before Thursday's film.

Rubbertown
Wednesday, August 14th

This documentary is about the Rubbertown neighborhood in Louisville, which is home to a toxic landfill, power plant, and several industrial facilities. Facing a cauldron of leaks, spills, and occasional explosions at the nearby facilities along with heightened rates of cancer and respiratory illness in the community, one resident decides that the only way to escape is to literally move her entire house to another county. The North Pole

This political comedy follows a group of friends from Oakland who struggle to stay rooted while their neighborhood becomes an increasingly hostile environment due to the impacts of gentrification and climate change. Cooling Center Audit
WE ACT is in the process of auditing cooling centers across Northern Manhattan during this summer's heat waves. To date, we have audited 31 cooling centers, and expect to visit all 44 – twice each – by the end of the summer. We will then share our recommendations with the City to improve the operation and management of its cooling centers. Building Power in the Community
A dozen WE ACT members are currently enrolled in our free Environmental Health & Justice Leadership Training ([link removed]) program. They are developing the skills and knowledge needed to become community advocates, whether supporting WE ACT initiatives or leading their own. To date, they have learned about the foundations of organizing, clean air quality, climate justice and energy security, and healthy homes with guest speakers such as Mike Harrington of the New School's Tishman Environment and Design Center, Dr. Jeanette Stingone of Columbia University's Center for Environmental Health in Northern Manhattan, and Dr. Maida Galvez of the New York State Children’s Environmental Health Center at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. This is one of the ways we help build power in the community!
