As we mark the 10th anniversary of the Affordable Care Act, I’d like to invite you to watch the Commonwealth Fund’s new short documentary film,

When we began production of this film, I naturally did not expect to be extending this invitation to you from my home office, as we fight through an unprecedented global health care crisis. I considered not sending it at all, knowing that many of us have pivoted our focus so completely to COVID-19 that there is little room for anything else.


However, it is here in your inbox because, in a dark moment, the film reminded me of a hopeful time in American health care. I thought it might do the same for you at a point in our history when hope is very much needed.


Of course, we will need much more than hope to defeat this pandemic. We will need the best of American innovation and ambition; we will need herculean efforts from health care leaders and providers; and we will need decisive and compassionate leadership.


I know that many of you are hard at work fighting this pandemic in myriad ways. I thank you for that and wish you well.
