Dear John,
At the end of 2023, President Vladimir Putin's regime passed a ruling which designated LGBTQ+ activists as "extremists," leading to dire legal consequences for individuals and organizations in the country, and placing the queer community at risk of arrests and prosecutions.
This alarming policy shift mirrors a growing global trend of the far-right targeting LGBTQ+ rights, and requires immediate international solidarity and support from the philanthropic community.
Find out how Urgent Action Fund is responding with continued funding and support for LGBTQ+ activists in Russia, as well as our advice on how other funders can act now. ([link removed])
We recently made a grant to an organization that aims to raise awareness about the new ruling and the implications for LGBTQ+ activists. This is just one example of the efforts, protections, and awareness raising we’re supporting through our grants.
More resources are needed to help activists advocate and protect themselves in light of the recent ruling. Here at Urgent Action Fund, we are responding to requests for support from activists across Russia, and we call on other funders to do the same.
