Dear John,

It’s the World Bank’s 80th birthday this year. But for an organisation that aims to tackle global poverty, the fact that 2.4 billion people are struggling to access food shows it needs to change.

The Bank's approach towards small-scale farmers in the world’s poorest communities shows why. Instead of empowering the world’s farmers to build a more sustainable food system, it's encouraging the privatisation of seeds – the root of our food system.

Let’s call on the World Bank to mark its big birthday by putting seeds back into the hands of farmers.

Privatising seeds undermines farmers’ rights to freely access their own varieties of seeds. Instead of eliminating hunger, it lines the pockets of big agribusinesses.

That’s why thousands of CAFOD supporters urged the World Bank in 2023 to help Fix the Food System. More than 70,000 parishioners and 18 bishops supported a letter written by Salina, a small-scale farmer from Bangladesh. As a result, we were able to share farmers' concerns on seeds with one of the Bank's key experts on global food.

We are delighted that the World Bank has started to listen. But what we need now is change.

So get creative and add your birthday message to ensure that seeds are kept in the hands of everyone.
