John,
Instead of our Wall Street-dominated banking system, with its predatory and discriminatory practices that exploit everyday people, we can build a democratic financial system that puts community needs above private profit.
That’s why, along with my sister-in-service Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, I have introduced the Public Banking Act to facilitate the creation of state and local public banks.
Unlike our existing financial system that excludes millions of people who don’t have savings or checking accounts, public and postal banks can ensure everyone has access to basic financial services. A public banking system would open doors for people who have been systematically shut out, and public banks can invest in and transform our communities.

Wall Street-run banks are failing to serve many of our neighbors who are struggling to make ends meet. We need a financial system that is democratically accountable, that serves everyone, and that puts people's livelihoods ahead of private profits.
There are hundreds of public banks throughout the world. Here in the U.S., the Bank of North Dakota has successfully operated for more than 100 years, contributing millions of dollars annually to the state’s general fund, while partnering with community banks to lower costs for borrowers.
Public banks can help fund infrastructure projects and encourage entrepreneurship through low interest rates and lower fees. Public banks can facilitate the transformative changes our communities desperately need—like affordable housing for all, financial inclusion, and a clean energy future.
Here’s what people are saying about the Public Banking Act:
“This legislation is a north star for the US public banking movement.”
-Michael Brennan, Public Money Action
“Public banking is key to unlocking economic transformation for communities often overlooked or exploited by our current financial system.”
-Trinity Tran, California Public Banking Alliance
“For too long, the big banks have maintained a lucrative monopoly on public deposits, making obscene profits as they continue to perpetuate racial and economic injustice. With public banking, we can start to flip the script, taking back our public deposits and reinvesting in low-income communities and communities of color.”
-Tousif Ahsan, New Economy Project

It’s time to unrig our economy and build a financial system that works for everyone. It’s time for public banking for all.
Always serving you,
