Republicans who screamed about a crisis on the border suddenly oppose plan to fix it
Disingenuous Republicans kicking and screaming about a southern border "invasion" suddenly feel like it's totally AOK to wait until after the 2024 election to lift a finger and actually do anything about it. It's almost as if they're taking self-serving marching orders from a very loud, very unhinged cult leader. The GOP’s contortions aren’t just grating for Democrats but also on some conservative Republicans who have been deeply involved in crafting bipartisan legislation only to see their plans sabotaged by their own party. Sen. James Lankford, the GOP’s lead negotiator on a deal pairing immigration changes with assistance to Ukraine and other allies, ripped his party's about face, noting, "we’re finally getting to the end [and] they’re like, 'Oh, just kidding. I actually don’t want a change in law because it’s a presidential election year.'"

VIDEO OF THE DAY: Republican called out to her face in nightmare interview
Republican Rep. Maria Salazar put her and her party's blatant hypocrisy on full display in a disastrous TV appearance, where she was rightly outed for celebrating the tens of millions of dollars she "delivered" to her district, despite voting time and again against the very bills in Congress that provided the federally allocated funds. There simply is no bottom with these charlatans and grifters.

Trump vows to push the world over the edge
Evergreen Collaborative: We’re running out of time to stop the climate crisis — but Donald Trump just vowed to “drill, baby, drill” and push the world into ecological catastrophe just so his Big Oil cronies can make a huge payday. Evergreen Collaborative is at the forefront of the fight to save the planet and put bold climate action at the top of America’s agenda. Can you chip in to make sure Trump’s dream never becomes our nightmare?
Democrats urge Biden administration to deschedule marijuana
Senate Democrats are putting new pressure on the Biden administration to finally ease federal restrictions on marijuana, urging the DEA in a letter to remove the plant from the Controlled Substances Act altogether. Rescheduling cannabis or removing it entirely would have significant implications for the marijuana industry and for cannabis users, millions of whom consume it for medical purposes. Since 1971 — and in incomprehensible defiance of all good reason — cannabis has been under Schedule I, the highest classification of the CSA, along with drugs like heroin and LSD, which the government formally considers to have high potential for abuse and no accepted medical use. Even so, 40 states and Washington, DC, have legalized some form of cannabis, for either recreational or medical use, leaving consumers and business owners to operate in a complicated patchwork of changing laws across the country. Uh, it's high time for change, folks.

US weapons exports up 50 percent in 2023 as Washington challenges Russia, China
American defense companies racked up $81 billion in new foreign military sales last year, a more than 50 percent increase from 2022, with huge deals spurred by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine leading the way. Direct commercial sales between nations and defense firms themselves, which tend to be more opaque, totaled $157.5 billion for fiscal 2023, up slightly from $153.6 billion in fiscal 2022. Guess we know the real answer to the burning question Edwin Starr asked way back in 1970.

Republicans are quietly deleting mentions of abortion from their websites
Gee, wonder why? Perhaps because voters — Republicans and Democrats alike — have made it clear they don’t actually want to see a federal abortion ban, even in deep-red states, where reproductive rights have repeatedly won at the ballot box since Roe vs. Wade was overturned? These radical, right-wing goons may want to change the subject now that unspeakable damage has been done, but we cannot let them off the hook. For the 64,000 rape survivors who became pregnant since SCOTUS gave states control over reproductive rights, for the thousands of would-be mothers who have forgone becoming pregnant for fear of suffering medical-related emergencies with no recourse to treat them, for the 10-YEAR-OLD child in Ohio who was forced to travel to Indiana for abortion care after she was raped — we must hold Republicans accountable.

Kyrsten Sinema spends $200,000 in taxpayer money on private jets
Since 2020, Sen. Sinema (I-HEDGEFUNDS) has spent roughly $210,000 of her Senate office budget on private charter flights for herself and her staff, according to publicly available records. In 2023 alone, Democrat-turned-polycorporatist spent $116,000 on chartered air travel, including a $50,000 trip on a luxury jet to the Grand Canyon to attend a ceremony where President Biden was signing into law new protections for the national park. Maybe this goes without saying, but just in case — senators’ budgets are limited, and flying private is incredibly expensive. Like, really, really expensive. Typically, congressional offices are careful about where they can save money. But Kyrsten Sinema isn't typical. The amount she spent on private planes in 2023 alone is greater than the current annual salaries of all but just a few of her most senior staffers. Oh, and there's the $20,000 in "wine-related expenses" she's billed her campaign, too. Had enough, Arizona? Ready for an upgrade? Ruben Gallego is your guy.

Right-wing Israeli ministers join thousands at event calling for the resettlement of Gaza
Senior members of Prime Minister Netanyahu's radical, right-wing government attended a conference with far-right-wing nationalists where it was made explicit that their vision of the Gaza War was not simply one of victory against Hamas but also expelling Arabs from the Gaza Strip altogether. "After Oct. 7th, history changed," event director Daniella Weiss said. "It’s the end of the presence of Arabs in Gaza. It’s the end." This flies in the face of decades of US State Department policy, is a blatant humanitarian violation, and demands serious questions about who is calling the shots in Israel, what their true intentions are, and the United States' role in enabling them.
More than 10,000 workers have signed UAW cards since Big Three wins
In the three months since United Auto Workers members ratified historic contracts with the Big Three automakers following their successful "Stand Up" strike, more than 10,000 workers have signed their union cards. "Our Stand Up movement has caught fire among America's autoworkers, far beyond the Big Three," UAW President Shawn Fain said in a statement. "These workers are standing up for themselves, for their families, and for their communities, and our union will have their back every step of the way." Solidarity forever!
