Starts Feb. 1
Poynter's first Beat Academy 2024 sessions, Extremist Politics: How to report on powerful undercurrents in the 2024 elections ([link removed]) , are set for Thursday, Feb. 1 and 15 at 1 p.m. Eastern.


Enrollees will get a framework to help suss out the many strands of extremism, and find ways to inform, not inflame, public debate. Participants will:
* Learn how to background candidates for extremist ties.
* Gain access to extremism resources and researchers at the national and state levels.
* Understand key areas to monitor: school board and local government races, ballot referenda and election procedures.
* Learn how to craft reporting to avoid giving extremists the platforms they seek.

Attendees can apply for an expenses-paid trip to Chicago on April 11 ([link removed]) for an advanced workshop on covering political extremism, thanks to the Joyce Foundation. At that workshop, journalists will get details for applying for one of three $10,000 reporting grants.
Other Beat Academy ([link removed]) sessions will include climate change, the 2024 election, transgender healthcare and immigration. Attend as many or as few webinars as you like for one price. News organizations can also buy seats in bulk for a discount.

The 2024 Poynter Journalism Prizes

Transforming Local Crime Reporting Into Public Safety Journalism (2024)
Deadline extended!
March 19-Sept. 17, 2024
This 24-week virtual course teaches change management to newsroom teams that want to overhaul their criminal justice reporting. Each team will receive feedback and consulting from experts.
With a retail price of more than $10,000, this course is being offered for just $1,000 to U.S.-based newsrooms willing to commit two hours per week on Tuesdays at 1 p.m. Eastern. Applications are open to teams of three to six people, including one front-line journalist and one manager with the ability to influence policy.
