That’s what The New York Times dubbed Kirsten, me and the other young women who defied the odds to defeat incumbent GOP congressmen in deep-red districts.

I first met Kirsten Gillibrand back in 2006, when we were freshman congresswomen — new to Washington, but more than ready to roll up our sleeves and get to work. We instantly connected over our shared values, our commitment to public service, and our fierce passion for electing more “dragon slayer” women to public office.

In Congress, we quickly became close partners, learning the ropes, building coalitions and fighting for legislation to help our districts. And outside the halls of the Capitol, we became dear friends.

Kirsten has stood with me throughout it all — difficult reelection campaigns, the long recovery after I was shot, and my husband Mark’s successful run for Senate. Trust me on this: Kirsten is someone you want on your team. And now, more than ever, we need her bold, fearless voice in the Senate. You see, Kirsten is facing a tough reelection campaign this year. New York Republicans just had their best election cycle in decades — flipping enough seats to retake control of the House. Now, those same extremists are targeting Kirsten’s seat.

If we lose in New York, we’ll almost certainly lose our Senate majority. And just as importantly, we’ll lose one of our fiercest advocates for the issues that matter most — gun violence prevention, reproductive rights, supporting families, and more.
