In the January issue of Health Affairs, Adrianna McIntyre and colleagues at Harvard University examine the effects of the introduction of nominal monthly premiums ([link removed] ) to Massachusetts Affordable Care Act Marketplace plans on coverage retention.

The researchers find that previously zero-premium plans that introduced nominal monthly premiums in 2017 had a 14 percent excess attrition during the following year than plans that maintained $0 premium.

These results suggest that nominal premiums create financial and administrative burdens for enrollees.
