Each new year offers the opportunity to look back at our past experiences, while gazing ahead at what challenges and opportunities may be in store. With this in mind, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is proud to share our 2023 Annual Report, which provides readers with an in-depth overview of how our staff, volunteers and partners continued making a bold impact at a national level, as well as in communities everywhere, over the past fiscal year.

Building on the theme of AFSP’s Talk Away the Dark campaign, the Annual Report reveals how our combined efforts helped shed light on this leading cause of death, whether it was by advocating for public policies that make a difference, funding research that opens our eyes to new ways of saving lives, providing warmth and understanding for those who’ve lost someone close to them, connecting people to help through efforts like the Interactive Screening Program, or walking from dusk to dawn to spread the message that suicide can no longer be left in the shadows. By taking a clear-eyed look at suicide as a public health issue, and leading the way to growing awareness through our campaigns and messaging, we can light the darkness with hope.

In this year’s Annual Report, you will find inspiring Volunteer Spotlight Stories featuring just a handful of our dedicated volunteers, including:

- How one woman, in memory of her young son, helps coordinate International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day events and the Healing Conversations program, and recently led the way in bringing the conversation to Spanish-speaking loss survivors.
- How another woman demonstrates support for her own son who struggles, by organizing education programs and Out of the Darkness Walks with his help.
- How volunteers with their own history of lived experience found their voice in speaking out to elected representatives about public policies related to suicide prevention, and discovered their stories of pain and perseverance can truly make a difference.
- How a combat Veteran who served in the United States Marine Corps for nearly 14 years has helped lead the charge in supporting at-risk Veterans.
- How a member of the first international fraternal organization to be founded on the campus of a Historically Black College has helped forge a partnership to bring suicide prevention to Black communities nationally.
- How a member of OSHA, inspired by the work he saw being done by AFSP in his community, helped spearhead a major alliance to bring suicide prevention to the workplace.

We hope that by reading these and other stories, along with accounts of AFSP’s many different programs and initiatives, you will feel galvanized by the impact taking place and help us continue our vitally important work. We encourage you to share the Annual Report with others, and join us as we continue to light the way in preventing suicide, and provide care for those affected.
