March 23, 2020: Thirty-two percent (32%) of voters nationwide consider the terms Wuhan virus or Chinese virus to be racist. A One America News public opinion poll found that 55% of voters disagree.[1]

As if often the case on questions of racism, there is a massive generational divide on this question:

  • Voters under 35 consider those terms racist by a 50% to 38% margin.
  • Voters 55 and older disagree. Just 19% of those older voters consider the terms racist while 67% say they are not.[1]

There is also a significant partisan divide:

  • Democrats are evenly divided on the question with 40% believing the terms are racist while 45% disagree.
  • Among Republicans, 24% believe the term is racist and 65% believe it is not.
  • Thirty percent (30%) of independents consider the terms Wuhan virus or Chinese virus to be racist. Fifty-eight percent (58%) of independents take the opposite view.[1]

Black and Hispanic voters are evenly divided as to whether those terms are racist. White voters, by a 2-to-1 margin, disagree.[1]
