In the Bidi Bidi Refugee Settlement, where nearly 200,000 people have settled after being displaced by civil war in South Sudan, Mercy Corps’ DREAMS initiative is a comprehensive approach to alleviating poverty and building livelihoods for refugees.

Mercy Corps’ DREAMS helps refugees launch sustainable businesses and build economic self-reliance through training, mentoring, seed capital grants, and savings groups. It connects entrepreneurs like Festo James, shown above, to local markets, suppliers and buyers, financial services, access to land, and more.
This innovative program has grown in Uganda and recently expanded to refugee communities in Ethiopia. In total, DREAMS will reach more than 33,000 households and impact more than 200,000 lives — transformative change made possible, in part, by sustaining support from our Partners In Possibility.
