There are six giant billboards up now in Oakland and Berkeley, California, reading "3% of U.S. Military Spending Could End Starvation on Earth." On Sunday in Oakland, we held an event with speakers representing a wide range of organizations, coming together around the need to move money from militarism to useful things. The event raised funds to feed the hungry.
When we put up billboards with peace messages all over the world, we not only design them, and negotiate with billboard companies that usually reject peace advocacy while happily advertising fighter jets, but we also organize events and flyering and media outreach to spread the message and engage concerned people in activism.
It may come as a surprise to former U.S. Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi — who on Sunday said she wanted supporters of peace in Gaza (the majority of people in the United States) investigated to see if they are funded by Russia — but the government of Russia has thus far sent us not a single ruble to put up billboards opposing warmaking.
