Stay safe during COVID-19!
Arlington Young Dems

Hey John -

We at the Arlington Young Democrats are hoping that you and your family are doing well in this time of uncertainty. We realize the gravity of the situation in our country and the health and safety of all our members is important to us, so we want to make sure that you’re taking care of yourself. That comes first.

To keep AYD members invested, the Executive board has been working diligently to make sure that our members can still stay engaged in the political process while we practice social distancing. Feel free to stay tuned in over the coming weeks to see what you can do from the comfort of your own home. We would love to hear your suggestions too!

So feel free to reach out to us at [email protected], if you have a virtual activity that you want to suggest. In the meantime, here’s what we have been up to:

AYD COVID-19 Resource Hub

We’ve rolled out a new section on our website dedicated to giving the most up to date information on resources in Arlington County to help assist people in need due to COVID-19. We’re updating guidelines from the Center for Disease Control, pulling in resources we’re receiving from the county government, and adding in new community service opportunities as we continue to build a coalition for good here in our county. We want this to be your one stop resource to get you through this difficult time.

Here’s what we have so far:

>> AYD’s COVID-19 RESOURCES

>> CARING FOR OLDER ADULTS

>> LATEST COVID-19 DATA IN VIRGINIA

>> ARLINGTON SITUATION REPORT

>> MANAGING ANXIETY & STRESS

If you have any questions, concerns, or comments, please reach out to our president, Dan Matthews, at [email protected].

All AYD In-Person Events Canceled

After further monitoring COVID-19, the Arlington Young Democrats have chosen to cancel all in-person events though the end of April. AYD still working on alternatives such as virtual meetings and other ways to get our members involved while we continue to practice social distancing.

Again, the health and safety of all our members and their loved ones is a top priority to us. We apologize for any inconvenience these scheduling adjustments may cause as we are following the news closely to monitor COVID-19. We will provide additional updates for any events that go virtual in the future. In the meantime, we encourage all members to check out our COVID-19 Resource Page.

To help keep others safe, here are best practices to avoid transmission of COVID-19:
  • Clean your hands for at least 20 seconds
  • Avoid close contact (stay at least 6 ft. away from others if you leave your home)
  • Stay home if you’re sick and do not leave your home
  • Cover coughs and sneezes with your elbow or tissue
  • Santize your hands often if you are unable to wash them
  • Wear a facemask if you are sick
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces
Stay safe and healthy while you help flatten the curve! We look forward to continue on with our regular schedule wheneer we are able to do so.

If you have any questions, concerns, or comments, please reach out to our president, Dan Matthews, at [email protected].

Blue Victory After Dark Event Postponed

Resolution to Support Service, Gig, Wage, and Health Care Workers in the Face of COVID-19

Though we may be held up in our respective houses, we can still use our collective voices to raise important legislative issues to help other communities in need. Working with the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Virginia 512, the Executive Board drafted the attached resolution to call on our elected officials to act to support our service, gig, wage, and health care workers and their families who are most impacted by the economic downturn.

We are calling on the Virginia Democratic Congressional Delegation and Governor Ralph Northam to do the following:

  • Ensure paid sick leave for ALL workers in our economy for at least 12 weeks
  • Call a special legislative session in Virginia to support workers during the ensuing economic turmoil
  • Freeze evictions and utility shutoffs, and urge landlords and utility companies to pause payments
  • Keep ICE out of our hospitals and health centers during this crisis
  • Make all relevant tests and treatments for the Coronavirus free at the point of use
  • Work with local non-profits and/or businesses to ensure enough food banks are available for those in need
  • Ensure information regarding COVID-19, government response, and resources is easily available through an online portal
