RELEASE: Biden Must Hold the Iranian Regime to Account for the Deaths of U.S. Service Members

Minneapolis, MN - Ilhan Omar’s Republican challenger for U.S. Congress (MN-5), Dalia Al-Aqidi, issued the following statement in response to the killing of American service members by Iran regime forces and proxies:

Three American service members were killed today and at least 25 were wounded after a suicide drone strike on a U.S. base in Jordan right on the border with Syria.

This entirely predictable tragedy is the result of the Biden administration’s weak responses to the daily attacks by Iran’s proxies against U.S. interests in Iraq, Syria, the Persian Gulf, and the Red Sea.

From his first day in office, President Biden pursued the fantasy that appeasing the world’s largest state-sponsor of terrorism in Tehran would somehow moderate the regime and make a larger regional war less likely. That policy, which included our facilitating the transfer of tens of billions of dollars to Iran, has been an abject failure as I have previously warned.

Biden’s focus on a so-called  ‘proportional response’ to the recent 150-plus regional attacks against U.S. interests have further exacerbated the problem as it is antithetical to restoring an effective American military deterrent. It is interpreted by our enemies as weakness and weakness provokes further attacks.

My heart goes out to the families of the U.S. servicemen killed and injured today. I call on the Biden administration to safeguard American forces in the region and to respond forcefully and disproportionally in a manner that will force a behavior change in the regime in Iran itself.

The President has the constitutional power to defend the nation from an armed attack without congressional authorization. Congress must act now to end our policy of appeasement.
