Dear Friend,
We ended 2023 with some good progress on crucial issues, such as cleaning up toxic coal ash dumps previously excluded from safeguards, protecting red knot shorebirds by safeguarding their food source, advancing protections from the largest source of lead emissions, halting a mining threat in Minnesota’s treasured Boundary Waters, and more.
In response to mounting public pressure, the White House announced it is pausing the approvals of all pending gas export facilities, including the Calcasieu Pass 2 (CP2) project proposed for the Gulf Coast of Louisiana. You have been raising the alarm to the federal government about how gas exports harm communities and the climate, and this latest move from the Biden administration shows that they are listening.
In the coming year, our work continues. When we win or when promises are made to protect the environment, invest in our ailing infrastructure, and stop fossil fuel extraction, advocates like you are vital to holding our decisionmakers accountable. We still depend on action takers to make sure the promises by our leaders are kept and no compromises are made. We hope we can count on you to keep pushing for progress.
We’ll need your help to make this year more impactful than the last. You can do that today by clicking here to take all the actions below.

Tell the United States Forest Service to strengthen protections for climate forests
Mature and old-growth forests are also known as “climate forests” because they offer natural climate solutions that remove and absorb large amounts of carbon from the atmosphere while providing vital refuges for many at-risk species and vulnerable wildlife. The U.S. Forest Service has proposed a policy that needs your input so we can ensure it contains the strongest possible protections for our forests.

We’re one step closer to get lead out of our drinking water
It’s 2024 — but millions of people across the country still drink water that passes through lead pipes, putting communities at risk of harmful lead contamination. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has finally proposed changes to the Lead and Copper Rule (LCR), which regulates how water systems handle lead in water. But we need to keep the pressure up to make sure the final rule is as strong as possible. Urge the EPA to adopt provisions that will help remove lead from drinking water, and to strengthen the weaker parts of the rule.

Horseshoe crab blood was a vital medical testing tool, but companies now have other options
For more than 400 million years – since before dinosaurs roamed the earth – horseshoe crabs have inhabited the world’s oceans. In the past several decades, these prehistoric creatures have been harvested for their bright blue blood. The blood is processed into a substance that detects contamination in a variety of products from vaccines to joint replacements. Synthetic alternatives are now available, and we need your help getting industry to adopt them.

Tell the EPA to enforce our chemical safety laws
Our families and communities have a right to live in toxic-free environments. However, chemical companies are swamping the market with toxic chemicals found in products we use, the air we breathe, and in the water we drink. These chemicals go unregulat4ed and the agencies charged with protecting us fail to consider or address the threat these substances pose to our health and environment. Urge the EPA to strengthen the rule to address all the ways people are exposed to chemicals.
