Hi John,
You may remember I mentioned my father, who we affectionately call Boca Eddie, the other night while I was up on the debate stage. I want to take this opportunity to tell you a little more about him.
Originally from Boston, my father left high school early to join the Army at the end of World War II. After his service, he used the GI Bill to attend the University of Alabama but left early to get started in business. He chose the schmata — or clothing — business.
As a traveling salesman, he was earning $18,000 a year. At that time, on that single income, my parents were able to purchase our first home for the same amount – $18,000.
Can you imagine that today? Buying your first home for the same salary you made that year… let alone as a salesman? Achieving such a feat would be impossible in today's economy.
Too many Californians just can’t keep up with rising housing costs in the Golden State. It’s why I’ve worked in Congress and alongside local leaders to help combat California’s twin crises of homelessness and housing affordability. Everyone deserves the opportunity to have a secure and affordable place to call home, and it’s something I have been focused on for years, and hope to address even more powerfully in the Senate.
Because here’s the thing. When my dad was raising me and my brother Dan, he taught us to believe that even when times are tough, you always make sure to give back to your community. He taught us to stand up to bullies. And he taught us to not back down even when facing tough challenges.
These ideas have guided me throughout my entire life.
I found myself reflecting on his guidance during Donald Trump's presidency, reminding myself not to yield to intimidation. Ultimately, I realized that bullies are, in fact, cowards.
With my dad’s good advice in mind, I took on Donald Trump and held him accountable for his abuses of power, and now the Justice Department is able to bring him to justice for his many violations of the rule of law.
I’m running for the United States Senate because everyone has the right to a roof over their head. And all Americans should be able to put food on the table, and afford medication. And they shouldn’t have to live in fear of a would-be dictator taking away their rights and freedoms.
My commitment to you is to keep up the fight for working families just like the one I grew up in. To uphold the great lessons my father taught me – to do what I do best.
Now that you’ve learned more about my upbringing and what motivates me, I hope you will chip in to my campaign to bring these values to the Senate.
