Former President Donald Trump has refused to rule out the possibility of selecting Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as a running mate in the general election. According to a report from the New York Post, the former president made “preliminary overtures” to Kennedy in order to gauge his interest in the idea.

“Trump operatives expressed an interest in Kennedy early on, but it was all premature,” an anonymous source in Trump’s orbit told the outlet. The source added that Trump’s campaign reached out very early into Kennedy’s White House bid in April 2023.

“Anything’s possible. I wouldn’t write it off by any means,” the source added.

In addition to the source, a large donor to both the Kennedy and Trump campaigns said the effort to recruit Kennedy as Trump’s vice president is very much still in play.

“It’s very much behind the scenes at this stage. As we progress you might see it bubble up a little bit more,” the donor said. “Bobby can bring new people to the polls.”

Kennedy, 70, initially launched his White House bid as a Democrat last year. Though he consistently polled as high as 15-20 percent, the Democratic National Committee refused to hold any debates or other primary election functions, essentially anointing Biden as the party’s nominee.

Kennedy eventually announced that he would be running for president as an independent.

A Trump-Kennedy ticket has long intrigued political pundits due to the possibility of cross appeal. While Kennedy has been referred to as an “anti-vaxxer” and a “conspiracy theorist” by many in the Democrat establishment and corporate press, his campaign has garnered support from a number of prominent liberals, including former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey.

It remains to be seen whether Kennedy would have interest in accepting the position, as he has previously said he would not. The two have praised each other in the past, however, despite some political disagreements.
