This past week, America’s information crisis deepened as long-standing institutions of good journalism like, The Baltimore Sun, LA Times, Sports Illustrated and Pitchfork all announced mass layoffs or mergers that will fundamentally undermine how these once heralded institutions covered the news.

The impact has been immediate, John. The continued shuttering of local newsrooms across the country, in addition to layoffs and acquisition from right-wing billionaires, has vastly changed our media landscape — and not for the better.

Courier was founded in part to fight the two-headed monster of shuttering newsrooms and the rise of right-wing conspiracy theories and bad information campaigns.

Unlike our mainstream counterparts, we don’t think paywalls and subscription fees should impede access to good, factual local news stories.
