The farm bill is a massive, multi-year piece of legislation covering everything from farm programs, to forestry, to nutrition -- and it's also a critical opportunity to help stabilize our climate. This legislation, typically passed every five years, sets the stage for how agricultural communities respond to climate change. But it's currently being fought over in Congress, so we need to speak out NOW, and show support for sensible steps to help the climate. Sign on to urge the swift passage of a climate-smart farm bill. Climate-smart steps include things like: 1) Incentivizing reductions in agricultural emissions. "Reducing methane emissions from livestock farming and nitrous oxide emissions from excess fertilizer are two particularly impactful opportunities for U.S. agriculture to slow rates of warming. So too is protecting the Inflation Reduction Act’s historic investment in rural climate solutions." (source: EDF) 2) Preparing agriculture to stay productive in a changing climate. "Investing in adaptation so that farms and ranches can continue to feed a growing population and support rural economies for generations to come, even in the face of new challenges posed by climate change." (EDF) 3) Investing in research to better measure change, and better measure our success in fighting it. Through steps like this, we can help farmers feed people, and fight environmental change at the same time. We can do it, and we must do it. Sign on, and join us in urging the swift passage of a climate-smart farm bill now. |
