Dear John,
In 2016, Hillary Clinton defeated Donald Trump by nearly 2.9 million votes in the national popular vote.
Yet because of the undemocratic and frankly irrational institution of the Electoral College, Donald Trump won the White House anyway.
And if we see another close election this November, it could easily happen again.
But we don’t have to just sit back and let it happen. There is a solution that could save our democracy before it’s too late: the National Popular Vote Compact.
The National Popular Vote Compact is a legal agreement among participating states to allocate their electoral votes to the winner of the national popular vote. The states that have already opted in together add up to 205 electoral votes, and with just 5 to 6 more states, we can reach the magic number of 270.
Will you make a donation to help spread the word, get the truth out, and end the undemocratic Electoral College system?
So many of the biggest problems we face as a country right now can be laid at the feet of the undemocratic and irrational Electoral College system.
Democratic candidates have won the popular vote in 7 of the last 8 presidential elections. And yet, because the Electoral College handed the White House to Trump in 2016 and George W. Bush in 2000, Republicans have held the White House for 12 of the last 23 years and selected 5 of the last 8 Supreme Court justices.
If not for the Electoral College, we wouldn’t have the disastrous Citizens United case, which opened the floodgates to unlimited amounts of corporate spending in politics. Roe v. Wade would still be the law of the land. There would never have been an Iraq War, or the global fall-out from that debacle.
And if it weren’t for the Electoral College, Donald Trump and the MAGA movement would have been vanquished in 2016, dumped on the scrap heap of history.
The 2024 election will likely once again go down to the wire and will be decided by a few thousand people in battleground states like Arizona, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina. The stakes are too high to risk another Electoral College meltdown.
The good news is that there’s a way to fix the senseless Electoral College system before the 2024 election. All we need is 5 to 6 more states to join the National Popular Vote Compact, and then we can end the Electoral College fiasco. Will you chip in to help us make it happen?
Yes, I’ll make a donation to Inequality Media Civic Action to get out the truth and help end the undemocratic Electoral College system.
