To end gun violence in America, we must address the culture and behaviors around firearms — and our nation’s culture-makers can help. That’s why Brady’s Show Gun Safety Campaign [[link removed]] convened an impressive group of filmmakers and influencers last weekend at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, UT.

Hosted in the premier Filmmaker Lodge, Brady led a meaningful conversation [[link removed]] [[link removed]] about Hollywood’s role in preventing gun violence by modeling responsible gun ownership and showing the consequences of reckless gun use on screen.

Moderated by Richard Rushfield of the Ankler, we heard from Rep. Maxwell Frost, producer Laura Lewis, actor and filmmaker Clark Gregg, and producer Jelani Johnson, as well as Brady President Kris Brown, Chief Programs and Policy Officer Christian Heyne, and our partners at Leaders Forum.

Think about it: Hollywood has always played an integral role in addressing our nation’s most challenging public health crises — from drunk driving, smoking, and more. What we see on screen has a deep influence on how we think about ourselves, what we value, and how we act. That’s why we’re engaging Hollywood leaders to tackle gun violence.

Because like we said at Sundance, policy change is important. But in a nation where there are more firearms than people, policy change alone is not enough to end gun violence. Most Americans watch three hours of TV per day. That means our nation’s creatives have the unique ability to reach Americans through the shows and films they watch and reshape their relationship with firearms to foster positive behavior change.

BIG NEWS: White House Announces Safe Gun Storage Executive Actions
“This historic and life-saving announcement from the White House addresses one of the root causes of our country’s gun violence epidemic: unsecured firearms.”

President Biden has once again delivered for gun safety: This week, the Biden-Harris Administration announced historic executive actions [[link removed]] [[link removed]] that will promote safe gun storage in America.

The executive actions, which Brady previously called on President Biden to pursue, will require the Department of Justice to issue guidance on safe storage and the Department of Education to engage principals and school leaders on the issue.

The need for safe gun storage is urgent. Today in America, 65% of gun owners have at least one unlocked firearm, which can lead to devastating outcomes, especially for children: In fact, eight children and teens are unintentionally injured or killed due to an unlocked or unsupervised gun in the home every day. Additionally, 76% of school shootings are facilitated by kids having access to unsecured or unsupervised guns at home or at the home of a close relative.

These executive actions will help address these troubling statistics and save lives by engaging, empowering, and educating communities about the importance of storing guns safely. We thank President Biden for prioritizing gun safety, and we continue to call on Congress to follow suit by passing a national safe storage law. Donor Spotlight: Margaret “Peg” Church

We are proud to recognize supporters of Brady who fuel our life-saving mission to free America from gun violence.

This week, that generous supporter is Margaret “Peg” Church, who has been a supporter of Brady for over two decades. Peg first got involved with Brady during the Million Mom March [[link removed]] — one of the largest protests against gun violence in U.S. history — and nearly 24 years later, Peg says the march was the best Mother’s Day Gift she’s ever received.

Until 2014, Peg was a school counselor in Philadelphia, where she supported students dealing with the loss of a loved one. She also experienced gun violence when a young child was tragically killed in crossfire in front of her school.

Gun violence touched Peg numerous times as a school counselor. And while it’s easy to become discouraged by this uniquely American epidemic, she remains hopeful because of today’s youth. She believes that young people see the issue of gun violence more clearly and are encouraging those around them to take action.

In her free time, Peg is an outspoken climate advocate, determined to create a better future for all children, including her grandchildren. She also loves reading historical novels, watching historical movies and TV, and spending time outside.
