Just as they care for our communities, caregiving electeds should also have the opportunity to care for their families.

The Vote Mama Foundation released their Campaign Funds for Childcare (CFCC) Report, offering tangible examples of what structural solutions can do for caregiving candidates. Since 2018, CFCC spending has increased by 662% for federal candidates and by 2,156% for state and local candidates, thereby allowing for more diverse candidates to run for office.

These kinds of structural changes are exactly what we need to create a stronger, more inclusive democracy!

The alarming rise in hate and discrimination impacts all of us. This week, the Brennan Center released a new study, “Intimidation of State and Local Officeholders,” highlighting the alarming increase in violent threats that many state and local officeholders—especially elected officials of color—across the nation face.

NAL CEO and President Ghida Dagher explained, “Unchecked threats and harassment will disadvantage candidates who may have to take steps to reduce their public exposure, especially women and people of color because they get such hateful abuse.”

ICYMI: Our 2021 State of Pay Report was cited in Governing’s article! States like New Jersey and Kansas are moving to increase legislator salaries after decades of little to no pay. Ensuring fair compensation can be instrumental in increasing the diversity of potential candidates and legislative bodies.

Here are some pretty awesome things our alumni have done recently:

  • Arizona State Senator Priya Sundareshan introduced SB1362, or the Right to Contraceptives Act that would protect state residents’ access to contraception.
  • Michigan State Senator Stephanie Chang co-sponsored unanimously passed Senate Bills 515-517 that will protect human trafficking victims and provide them with the same rights in court currently provided to survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence and also provide state law enforcement officers and prosecutors additional tools to help prosecute such criminals.
  • Ann Arbor City Councilmember Ayesha Ghazi Edwin sponsored a unanimously passed resolution denouncing rising hate and discrimination in Ann Arbor and calling for a lasting bilateral ceasefire in Gaza and Israel.
  • New York Assembly Member Marcela Mitaynes continues to advocate for the passage of the Clean Deliveries Act, a piece of legislation that would protect vulnerable communities from repeated exposure to pollution caused by warehouse activity.

Know someone who should be included in this list? Let us know! We're so proud of our NAL family for taking action to create a stronger, more inclusive democracy and would love to give everyone a shoutout!

Help fight systemic white supremacy by supporting our mission to get more women, immigrants, and underrepresented Americans on the ballot and into power.
