This is a huge win

Friend — this is huge news. Earlier this month, we reached out with the update that Calcasieu Pass 2 (CP2) in Louisiana, the largest-ever liquified natural gas (LNG) project in history, was under consideration and nearing approval.

If approved, CP2 would destroy coastal wetlands and spew toxic pollution into the environment and nearby communities. It would have a yearly climate impact equal to the annual emissions of 53 coal-fired power plants or 43 million cars.

LCV members — and folks from across the environmental movement — made their voices heard and said NO. We submitted thousands and thousands of letters to President Biden. Our policy teams made sure that lawmakers had the facts. Our partners rallied scientists, frontline communities, social media influencers and so much more.

And now, as of this morning, the Biden administration has officially paused ALL new export approvals, including CP2, so that the Department of Energy can properly weigh their climate and environmental justice impacts.

Bottom line — this is one of the biggest decisions President Biden — or ANY president — has ever made to rein in the fossil fuel industry and tackle the climate crisis. Before this, the Department of Energy NEVER rejected an LNG export permit — and now all new LNG export approvals are on pause.

With temperatures and extreme weather events on the rise, this is a critical step toward a better climate future. Additionally, LNG export facilities would make it nearly impossible for the U.S. to achieve our climate goals. Now we have a clear signal from the President that our future must and will be one of clean energy.

The truth is, this kind of action only happens when our movement organizes to MAKE it happen. I want to thank you personally for all that you do as part of our movement, Friend.

We’re going to be in touch soon about what happens next. The oil and gas industry is already going ballistic.

Polluters are going to lose this fight. And we’re going to need your help to make that happen. Thanks again, Friend.

Onward,

Gene Karpinski
