Councilmember Trayon White's Statement Regarding the Incident of a Pre-K Student Leaving Hendley Elementary School’s After-School Program Undetected by Staff

(Washington, DC) — The following is a statement from Councilmember Trayon White, Sr., regarding the incident of a 4-year-old student leaving an after-school program and walking home alone. Councilmember Trayon White said:

“I am deeply concerned to learn that a 4-year-old student was able to leave an after-school program and walk home alone undetected by program staff. I have been in touch with the child’s mother and discussed her concerns following the aftermath of this incident.

The safety and well-being of all our students are paramount. Any situation that compromises the security of our students is alarming. It is crucial for us to work as a village and ensure that proper measures are in place to prevent such incidents from occurring. Implementing enhanced supervision protocols and systematic checks can significantly reduce the risk of students leaving unnoticed. It is essential to address this concern promptly and work collaboratively to create a safe and secure environment for every student in our care.

Hendley Elementary School, the Metropolitan Police Department, and the DC Child and Family Services Agency have launched an investigation in accordance with DC Public Schools’ (DCPS) Incident and Emergency Response protocol. I also plan to connect with Hendley’s Principal to learn more about the incident and their course of action to ensure this does not happen again.”
