The jury's decision is in regarding the defamation damages suit filed by E. Jean Carroll against former President Donald J. Trump.
In Manhattan on Friday, the jury ruled that Trump is liable to pay $83.3 million to Carroll as compensation for defamation, as reported by The New York Times. Carroll had accused Trump in 2019 of raping her in a department store dressing room many years ago.
Trump consistently rejected these allegations through various channels, including social media, press conferences, and political campaign events. The nine-member jury, however, determined that $65 million in punitive damages should be awarded, recognizing Trump's ongoing criticisms of Carroll as malicious, both during and after his presidency. The verdict followed Carroll's legal team emphasizing Trump's continuous disparaging remarks about her.
The verdict was announced following heated final arguments during which Trump abruptly left the courtroom. He did come back for the closing arguments presented by his lawyer but exited the courthouse at 4 p.m.(EST), prior to the jury announcing their decision.
Judge Kaplan informed the jurors that they were no longer bound by his directive to keep their identities confidential. However, he advised, “my advice to you is that you never disclose you were on this jury.”
Carroll's legal team reportedly displayed visible emotion, embracing each other and wiping away tears. The announcement of the $65 million figure in the press room elicited an audible gasp from reporters. Exiting the courthouse, Carroll was seen arm in arm with her legal team, smiling broadly for the cameras.
Carroll initiated the lawsuit against Trump in June 2023, with the jury tasked solely with determining the damages to be awarded. The trial commenced on January 16, with Trump being the final witness to testify, his testimony lasting less than five minutes.
Seeking upwards of $12 million in damages, Carroll alleged actions and statements by Trump that a previous jury found to be defamation. During closing arguments, Judge Lewis Kaplan instructed both sides to refrain from interruptions and remain silent. "There are to be no interruptions by anybody, no audible comments by anybody else," Kaplan stated, as reported by CNN. When Trump's lead attorney, Alina Habba, attempted to make an objection, Kaplan responded, "You are on the verge of spending some time in the lock-up, now sit down."
At the beginning of Carroll's attorney Roberta Kaplan's opening statement, President Trump stood up and left the courtroom. Judge Kaplan acknowledged Trump's departure, stating, "The record will reflect that Mr. Trump just rose and walked out of the courtroom."
Judge Kaplan, unrelated to Carroll's attorney, took a moment to reprimand the defense and remind them to remain seated. Boris Epshteyn, an aide to the president who left with him, returned without Trump.
In May, Trump was found liable for battery in the civil suit brought by E. Jean Carroll. However, he was not found liable for rape, a charge Carroll had included in her lawsuit.
