Catching Up with Quigley: Week In Review

Dear John,

I hope you've had a good week. I wanted to touch base and highlight some of the work I accomplished in Illinois' 5th district this week. District work periods are a critical time for members of Congress to meet with members of the community and hear firsthand the issues that keep them up at night.

1. Met with Local Leaders and Students in Barrington

On Tuesday, I met with the Barrington Area Council on Governments to talk about how I can better use my role as Ranking Member of the THUD Appropriations Subcommittee to the Barrington area. We also talked about the millions of dollars in Community Project Funding that I have secured for local projects so far. I am determined to see the FY24 Projects signed into law so even more of our communities can see these positive impacts.

I also stopped by Barrington High School to talk with students about getting involved with government! It was voter registration day at the school, and I talked with these students about the value of civic education and engagement. The thoughtful and insightful interactions I had with these students gives me greater faith in the future of our country. Just days after my visit, we tragically lost a Barrington High School student. My thoughts are with her family, Barrington's students and teachers, and the entire Barrington area community.

2. 51 Years After Roe v. Wade

I'm proud to serve as a member of the Pro-Choice Caucus where I have consistently supported legislation reaffirming access to reproductive services like abortion and birth control. On Monday, I reflected on the 51st anniversary of the Roe V. Wade decision, which affirmed abortion is a protected right under the constitution. Since its overturning in June 2022, conservative legislatures across the country have sought to impose total or near-total bans on abortion access. These anti-choice movements are dangerous. My colleagues and I will not rest until the right to choose is the law of the land.

3. Joined MSNBC to Discuss Immigration Negotiations

On Sunday, I joined Alex Witt on MSNBC to discuss some of the most pressing issues facing Congress. I gave my thoughts on the importance of thorough, comprehensive immigration reform amid conservative pushes for inhumane, rushed policy changes. I also reflected on the dangers of using the war in Ukraine as a bargaining chip for these prospective changes. As I have long said, we can’t let a critical foreign policy objective, particularly one which impacts our own security, be conditioned on domestic policies that are highly partisan.
