Dear Neighbors,
Happy New Year! We are rapidly approaching the start of the 2024 session on February 12th, and I am looking forward to building on our work from last year and representing our district at the Capitol. This session my colleagues and I will be focused on passing policy legislation and a robust capital investment bill.? There will be limited funding available for legislation outside of the budget bills we passed last session. Your input on our work is invaluable and I'd love to hear from you, so please reach out to set up a virtual or in-person meeting. I sit on the transportation, agriculture, education finance, and workforce development committees, but I am also available to talk about any issue that is important to you.

*Cold Weather Rule*
While we?ve seen the recent frigid weather calm the last week, I want to include a quick reminder that Minnesota?s ?cold weather rule? is now in effect, which protects residents from having their electric or natural gas service shut off between October 1 and April 30. To ensure your service is safe from disconnection, you must make and keep a payment plan that you and your utility provider agree on. More information is available on the Minnesota Department of Commerce?s website [ [link removed] ].

*Ethnic Studies Social Studies Standards Passed*
Last session I was the author of a bill to ensure Ethnic Studies is taught in high schools across our state. Additionally, there has been important work done to incorporate Ethnic Studies into Social Studies standards. After two hearings where students described the importance of Ethnic Studies in education, an Administrative Law Judge upheld almost all of the proposed Ethnic Studies Social Studies standards in a report released Tuesday. The Minnesota Department of Education will approve some minor details of the legislation and it will become law starting in 2026.
All students deserve to see themselves ? their own cultures, communities, and histories ? within their education. It is no surprise that studies have found that when students? experiences and backgrounds are reflected in their curriculum, they become more engaged in learning, they have a greater sense of belonging, and they achieve better educational outcomes. I?m so thankful for the students who have advocated for this needed legislation and proposed standards changes.
