Dear neighbor,

As the Representative for coastal Los Angeles County, one of my top priorities is addressing homelessness. This week I joined Congressman Brad Sherman (D-CA) to send a letter to Housing and Urban Development Secretary Marcia Fudge urging her to change HUD policy that counts disability benefits as income. This provision prevents some disabled veterans from accessing housing vouchers, which are critical in our fight to end veteran homelessness. Click here to read our full letter. PAWS UP: I was honored to receive a perfect report card from the Humane Society Legislative Fund this week! As a member of the Congressional Animal Protection Caucus, I have long been an advocate for animal welfare. I am pleased to have introduced legislation on a wide range of animal protection issues, from a bill to end unnecessary animal testing at the VA to legislation banning trophy hunting. I remain committed to advocating for ethical treatment of animals as your voice in Washington.

TALKING AI: As we continue our work to respond to the rapid development of AI technology, it is essential that we strike a balance between encouraging innovation and mitigating potential risk. Earlier this week I joined Yahoo Finance Live to discuss a bill I recently introduced with Congressmen Don Beyer (D-VA), Zach Nunn (R-IA), and Marc Molinaro (R-NY).

The Federal Artificial Intelligence Risk Management Act, a bipartisan and bicameral bill, would require federal agencies and their contractors to follow the AI risk management guidelines put forth by the National Institute of Standards and Technology. To maintain US leadership in AI development, we must ensure that new technology does not endanger our national security or the safety of individuals. I’m committed to seeing this critical legislation signed into law. Watch my full interview below.
