Dear John,
Right now, tens of thousands of animals are being held captive in zoos and aquariums across the UK. Taken from the wild, or bred into captivity, these animals quietly suffer as zoo-goers pass through.
We'd like to share with you Anne's story.
Anne is just one of the many elephants imprisoned in UK zoos. She was stolen from the wild in Sri Lanka decades ago. Ripped from her family and the life of freedom that she deserved. She was sold into the circus industry, and made to perform demeaning 'tricks' for a paying audience, for 55 long years.
She was moved to a zoo, after footage emerged of her being badly beaten. She has suffered physically and emotionally from the years of abuse she has endured. Her body bears severe arthritis, and she shows signs of stereotypies. She is now forced to live at Longleat Safari Park, in solitary confinement. She is alone, with no family to call her own. A living, emotional being, used by the entertainment industry for profit, even after all these years.
