February 6^th: Getting A Good Job Without a College Degree: A Town Hall for Job Seekers, Employers & Educators

As our economy changes, it is critical that our workforce and employers also evolve to capitalize on the talent of American workers and ensure the best qualified candidates are considered for every position. However, that is not always the case, as many employers are missing out on high-quality talent simply because outdated hiring systems often emphasize unnecessary degrees and arbitrary qualifications of the skills necessary to thrive in a job. To address this issue, and broader questions of hiring for our veterans and Americans without a four-year degree, I will be hosting a town hall on Tuesday, February 6^th, at 1:00pm CT entitled “Getting a Good Job Without a College Degree: A Town Hall for Job Seekers, Employers, and Educators.” You can RSVP for the town hall and panel discussion here, and I look forward to seeing you there.

My Commitment to a Two-State Solution and Peace in the Middle East

This week, I led 43 of my colleagues in the House in sending a letter to President Joe Biden, requesting that the administration outline a strategy toward sustained and enduring peace between the Israeli and Palestinian people through a two-state solution. The letter comes following Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s public rejection of the prospect of a two-state solution last week. Without sovereign governments for both Israelis and Palestinians, the endless cycle of violence, terror, and destruction will continue. While a two-state solution is not possible until those responsible for October’s attack on Israel are brought to justice and the remaining hostages are released, now is the time to begin planning for a day where Israelis and Palestinians can live in peace. This will only be possible through a two-state solution. On Wednesday, I spoke with Joy Reid of MSNBC to discuss what a possible path forward to a two-state solution could look like and the steps I would like to see President Biden take next to make sure we work with our partners and allies, including Israel, to make this a reality.

My Response to Donald Trump’s Racist Attacks on Nikki Haley

Last week, former President Donald Trump reposted a false story about former United States Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley claiming she was ineligible to serve as president because her parents were not U.S. citizens when she was born in South Carolina. The former president also went on to mock Haley’s legal first name, Nimarata, seemingly to portray her as some “outsider.” Unfortunately, this was not the first time former President Trump has promoted “birther” conspiracy theories, with his first coming in 2012 when he falsely claimed former President Barack Obama was born in Kenya instead of Hawai’i. He also attacked Senators Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio for not being born in the U.S. and Vice President Kamala Harris for her immigrant parents.

As an Indian American who moved to the U.S. when I was only a few months old, these types of racist and bigoted attacks on Haley’s parents and her birth name have resonated with me deeply. While I do not agree with many of Nikki Haley’s policies, no American should have their loyalty questioned or their name or country of origin ridiculed and attacked. I joined CNN’s Jake Tapper and MSNBC’s Ali Velshi last week and over the weekend to discuss how disgusting, racist rhetoric like this from President Trump belittles all American immigrants and contributes to a dangerous normalization of hate speech. All politicians and Americans, regardless of political party and ideology, should call this type of xenophobic and unacceptable language out and condemn it. My Discussion with Foreign Policy on the Taiwanese Elections and Our Relationship with the CCP

This week, I joined Foreign Policy to discuss the recent Taiwanese elections and how they impact our relationship with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). As Ranking Member of the Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the CCP, I co-led a hearing on the CCP’s organized Discourse Warfare, which included launching social media campaigns inside Taiwan that were aimed at dissuading people from voting for the eventual winning candidate, Tsai Ing-wen, because of his party’s positions supporting democratic governance and independence from the CCP’s influence. While the CCP’s efforts to interfere with Taiwan’s elections did not impact the results this time, we should be deeply concerned about its social media campaigns in the future, including the possibility it uses similar tactics to influence elections here in the U.S. in 2024 and across the world. I am committed to ensuring that all steps are taken to counter CCP’s influence campaigns all over the world, holding the CCP accountable for de-escalation in the Indo-Pacific region, and backing our democratic partners in Taiwan.
