Hi John,
This week is National Gun Violence Survivors Week, so I wanted to highlight a dark milestone that America is once again on track to set in the next few days.
In early February, the number of Americans killed by guns will surpass the total for the entire calendar year in any other high-income country. Unfortunately, this distressing milestone has been a grim reality for several decades and occurs earlier with each passing year.
As an Army veteran, physician, and the former Chief of Inpatient Psychiatric Services at Walter Reed, I find it deeply troubling that so many Americans, particularly children, face the same horrors and traumas in our communities as soldiers in a war zone.
And what’s truly sad is we know what the problem is — guns. There are so many basic common sense gun reforms we can pass such as banning assault weapons and universal background checks that Congress could pass that would save lives without infringing on personal liberties.
I served for 25 years in the Army fighting to keep Americans safe. Now I’m continuing that fight by running for Congress in Maryland’s #1 battleground to stand against Republicans in Washington who refuse to get guns out of our communities and schools. Can you chip in today to support my campaign and help me lead the fight for common-sense gun reform?
