John,
Earlier today, the International Court of Justice ordered the Israeli government to act immediately to prevent a genocide of the Palestinian people. As Jeremy Scahill of The Intercept wrote:
“This ruling from the ICJ is a massive legal defeat for Israel and its premier defenders, the U.S. and Germany.”
Meanwhile, the Biden administration continues to transfer bombs and other weapons to the Israeli government, despite overwhelming and credible evidence that they’re being used to commit war crimes.
This week, some colleagues in Congress joined me in demanding the U.S. Government Accountability Office and President Biden enforce their own policies and U.S. laws around aiding the Israeli military.
The Leahy Laws prohibit U.S. assistance to foreign militaries when credible information indicates a “gross violation of human rights,” including “prolonged detention without charges and trial” and “flagrant denial of the right to life, liberty, or the security of person.”
In addition, the Biden administration’s own Conventional Arms Transfer Policy states that arms transfers will not be authorized if the arms will be used to commit genocide, crimes against humanity, or other serious violations of international humanitarian or human rights law.
Please sign on to amplify our demands of President Biden and the U.S. Government Accountability Office: Assess the Israeli government’s human rights compliance with your own policy and U.S. law—and if not, enforce these policies without delay and stop U.S. military assistance to Israel’s government.
Thank you. As the primary funder of Israel’s military, the U.S. government has a particular responsibility to stop this unfolding genocide.
In solidarity,
Rashida
