Hi,

Twice in the last six presidential elections, the candidate who lost the
popular vote won the White House: George W. Bush in 2000 and Donald J.
Trump in 2016.

And if not for 43,000 votes in 3 states – 0.02% of 154.6 million votes
cast nationwide – it would have happened again in 2020.

But we have a plan to fix it: the National Popular Vote Interstate
Compact.

Under the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, states representing
270 electoral votes would come together and agree to reward their
electoral votes to the winner of the national popular vote.^1 If national
popular vote legislation passes in just 6 more states, we will end the
undemocratic impact of the Electoral College.^2

Under the terms of the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, the
agreement only gains the force of law when enough states have joined the
compact to award 270 electoral votes to the popular vote winner.

As of this writing, states comprising 205 electoral votes have gotten on
board, meaning we only need 65 more electoral votes to win – and the bill
has already passed at least one chamber in 8 additional states with 78
more electoral votes!^3

We will no longer have presidents losing the popular vote by millions,
then going on to appoint Supreme Court justices for life who don't reflect
popular will.

No more presidential campaigns ignoring all but a handful of states.^4

We can finally have a true national election based on the principle of one
person, one vote, and presidential candidates who have to consider the
views and interests of every American, not just those living in
all-important battleground states like Wisconsin, Arizona, and
Pennsylvania.

We want to be 100% clear: Demand Progress Action is a nonpartisan group,
and we don't endorse or oppose any candidate. Under the National Popular
Vote Interstate Compact, the winner of the popular vote would win the
presidency regardless of which party they belong to.

This is about small-d democracy and majority rule – and the National
Popular Vote Compact is a straightforward, achievable fix to get it done.
