John,
If Republicans were serious about reducing our nation’s debt, they would start by raising taxes on the rich and corporations. Instead, they just use debt as an excuse to cut vital services for working families like Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and SNAP while letting the wealthy and big firms keep all their tax loopholes and special breaks. The latest example of the Republicans’ deficit hypocrisy is their so-called “fiscal commission” on lowering debt: they’ve made clear it will be all about service cuts and not at all about tax fairness.
House Budget Committee Chair Jodey Arrington has passed his so-called “fiscal commission” out of committee and says that Speaker “MAGA Mike” Johnson is “100 percent committed to this commission” and is seeking to attach it to must-pass government funding bills this winter.[1]
A fiscal commission is nothing more than a way for conservatives to cut Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, SNAP, and other key programs behind closed doors so the American people don’t know who to blame.
We’re fighting back against backdoor attacks on our earned benefits. An honest approach to addressing our nation’s debt would include making the rich and corporations pay their fair share in taxes, not attacking programs and services relied upon by working families and older Americans.
Click here to send a message directly to your U.S. representative and tell them to oppose the creation of a fiscal commission. Tell them that a vote for a fiscal commission is a vote to cut Social Security and other programs.
While congressional Republicans claim these cuts are in the name of “fiscal responsibility,” they’re simultaneously proposing plans to cut taxes for the wealthy and corporations. This is a clear example of why the GOP’s proposed commission has nothing to do with addressing our nation’s debt. They simply want to attack popular programs to then turn around and use that money to give their wealthy campaign contributors more tax breaks.
Let’s defeat this fiscal commission before it starts!
Send a message to your U.S. representative today and demand they vote no on the so-called fiscal commission.
Thank you for taking action, defending our earned benefits and demanding the wealthy start paying their fair share in taxes.
