Debating and Drafting Border Provisions in Congress
B Stands for Breakthrough?
As we approach the end of January, the future of Senate negotiations on border and migration policy in exchange for foreign aid for Ukraine and other allies is murky.
Whether they proceed or not, there’s something to celebrate here: Democrats and Republicans have been sitting down together and having difficult conversations about real challenges that we need to address.
Part of the challenge is that we don’t know the final details, just reports, some of which are conflicting. Some reports suggest the deal would include concerning measures that actually could be contrary to increasing order at the border. And we know that an agreement would leave much of our broken immigration system unaddressed.
That said, solutions-focused conversations at the federal level that could lead to meaningful policy changes are highly encouraging. Bipartisan solutions to immigration challenges can help build a system that simultaneously works for native-born Americans and immigrants. According to recent polling, Americans want solutions that would create a more secure, efficient, and humane border process.
At the National Immigration Forum, we believe now is the time for a divided and highly polarized government to come together not only for order and security but also for the sake of our nation’s longstanding value of welcome. We hope you continue to join us in taking action toward meaningful change.
Stay hopeful and committed,
Oula Alrifai Assistant Vice President of Field and Constituencies National Immigration Forum
