In February in Orlando, Florida, Grandparents For Truth will host our inaugural Black History Month Teach-In! We will be bringing together stakeholders from across the spectrum, including grandparents and their grandkids, faith leaders, elected officials, on-the-ground activists, teachers, students, librarians, and national partners. It will be a great opportunity to hear about hidden Black history, and how to fight back against attacks on teaching it!

Are you interested in leading your friends, acquaintances, colleagues, and other grandparents in your community to fight for the freedom to learn and read? If you’re interested in opening a local Grandparents For Truth group in your community, stay tuned for updates about how to register! Group leaders receive a box of merch including t-shirts, buttons, signs, and a banner; as well as resources, training, and personalized, one-on-one guidance for how to fight back against authoritarianism and censorship. If you want to take action but don’t want to lead a group, that’s alright too - just sign up to be a Grandparent For Truth and we’ll connect you to local actions.

Last year, we launched Grandparents For Truth, a program aimed at bringing together grandparents—and everyone else who believes in the freedom to learn—to speak out against book bans and censorship. The response has been incredible. All around the country we’ve had members stand up and tell us why Grandparents For Truth is so important to them, and we wanted to share a few of those stories with you.

Throughout 2023, People For made big strides in the fight for the freedom to learn. We took on the College Board, launched our fast-growing Grandparents For Truth program to help stop censorship and stand against Moms for Liberty, and we helped turn the tide on an overzealous school board in Temecula. We also sponsored the reading of banned books and handed out some cool swag in support of Banned Books Week. So, here’s a look back at the incredible year that was 2023.

Our friends at The 19th spoke to People For’s Alana Byrd and Marge Baker to get the scoop on Grandparents For Truth and our fight to protect education from groups like Moms for Liberty. They wrote up their conversation and were kind enough to let us share it with you.

People For’s National Political Director Markus Batchelor met with three enthusiastic school board candidates from Virginia for a live panel discussion on why they’re running for their respective school boards. Tracy Blake, Marcia St. John-Cunning, and Randy Riffle are standing up for Truth, Justice, and the American Way in Virginia, and they’re eager to let us all know what motivated them to get involved.

In Temecula, CA we continue to work with our local grandparents and allies to push forward with the recall campaign of three extremist right-wing school board members. And we have great news! One of the extremist members, perhaps spooked by the campaign against him, resigned from his position and will be leaving the district! Additionally, our allies gathered and submitted enough signatures to get the Board President on the ballot for a recall in 2024! This is the same Board President who is now being sued by the ACLU for violating the first amendment rights of the citizens of Temecula. We’ll keep you posted as the recall effort continues.
