Dominic's Constituency Newsletter
John xxxxxx,
Since my last update, I have taken on constituents' concerns on a range of issues, from social housing to local healthcare services. You can read more about my meetings with PA Housing - Elmbridge's largest social housing provider - and an update on Glenlyn Medical Centre, below.
Elsewhere in the constituency, we have been working to secure local road improvements and get potholes filled, after the Conservative government announced an extra £82.4 million in road funding for Surrey. If you know of a road that could benefit from resurfacing, please get in touch using the details at the end of this email.
In Westminster, I have spoken in the Commons on nuclear energy & the recent Houthi attacks on commercial shipping in the Red Sea, and voted in the Safety of Rwanda (Asylum and Immigration) Bill.
More on this, and my recent ** column in The Telegraph ([link removed])
on how to choke off Russia's illicit businesses financing the war in Ukraine, below.
As ever, if you are a constituent in need of my assistance, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
Yours sincerely,
Dominic
Sitting Down with Glenlyn Medical Centre
Local patients at Glenlyn Medical Centre have been in touch with me to express their concerns following the announcement of about GP redundancies at the surgery. I went to speak with Practice Manager, Joseph Todd, Business Manager, Heather Chatwin, alongside Dr Strickland and Dr Kapoor to raise residents’ concerns with the practice.
I raised concerns about the difficulty in securing GP appointments, sought reassurances on GP to patient ratios, and asked about arrangements for patients with particular vulnerabilities or complex conditions. I also expressed concern about the lack of consultation, elevated anxiety levels amongst the local community. I asked the team at Glenlyn to provide data on the number of available GP appointments, patients per GP and the increase in the level of patients being seen as a result of changes at Glenlyn.
Further to this, I will be writing to Healthwatch – an independent body responsible for listening to local communities and holding GP surgeries to account – to reinforce the case for them to visit Glenlyn Medical Centre.
I will provide updates as and when I hear more.
Meeting with PA Housing’s Chief Executive, Michael McDonagh
Following our campaign to improve outcomes for PA Housing tenants, it was good to catch up with Chief Executive, Michael McDonagh, to hear what steps he and the new leadership team at PA Housing are taking to improve the service they are providing tenants.
It was reassuring to hear that repair requests were down by 25% in December 2023 compared to December 2022, but there is still more to do to get this down to usual levels. Further to this, the team have changed the way their Walton office operates so that tenants can simply walk in to talk to a member of the team about any issues they may be having in their home.
Following feedback I have received from casework enquiries, I stressed that local residents are keen to see improvements in communications they receive from PA Housing. Michael assured me this is a top priority for the organisation, and they have recently spilt their neighbourhoods into smaller areas which has increased the number of neighbourhood co-ordinators. This will help to improve the level of communication residents receive from them.
If you are experiencing problems in your home, please let me know using the contact details at the end of this email.
Getting more potholes repaired across Esher and Walton constituency
We’ve already had success getting roads like Dennis Road and Walton Road in Molesey resurfaced, but there is still more to do.
Great news: In November, the Government confirmed an extra £82.4 million funding for Surrey County Council to maintain and resurface even more of our roads over the next 10 years. This funding is in addition to the funding Surrey County Council was expecting to receive over the next decade.
As the weather gets colder, Surrey County Council are working hard to fix our roads as soon as possible. However, it is important that the Council knows when a pothole appears so they can come and fix it. If you notice a pothole in need of repair, you can report it below:

Elmbridge Sports College launch event
I enjoyed joining Ray Hole and the team at Elmbridge Sports College (formally Walton Casuals Football College) for the launch of the new multi-sport College.
Elmbridge Sports College, located at Xcel Sports Hub in Walton, offers a BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in sports coaching and development. By making full use of the facilities available at Xcel Sports Hub the college is extending to incorporate swimming and athletics, as well as football onto the course.
It has been great supporting Ray and the team as they have worked to make the most of the facilities on offer at Xcel Sports Hub and transform the college into a multi-sport offering.
Westminster Watch
* 23 January: I spoke in the Prime Minister's Statement on UK military action against Houthi rebels in Yemen. The UK is steadfast in its protection of global maritime trade.
* 16 January: In Energy and Net Zero Questions, I asked what the government is doing to support the addition of small modular reactors to the UK's energy mix, following a joint venture between UK-based Newcleo and French start-up NAAREA.
