Trump calls for "all willing states" to deploy National Guard troops to Texas
Amid Texas’ ongoing, dangerous, and flatly unconstitutional fight with the federal government over deadly razor wire installments along the US-Mexico border, the serially indicted con man and runaway frontrunner for the Republican nomination rang all manner of seditious alarm bells calling for "all willing States to deploy their [national] guards to Texas to prevent the entry of Illegals, and to remove them back across the Border." Simply put, border enforcement is the federal government's business. Gov. Greg Abbott's incredibly stupid, high-stakes game of chicken is only worsening an incredibly challenging situation, and Trump's call for state troops to rise up against the Biden administration is a direct and deeply unsettling assault on the rule of law — which makes perfect sense coming from a treasonous autocrat who places himself above all else, including the US Constitution.

VIDEO OF THE DAY: Top Trump official sentenced to prison
MAGA lackey and one-time senior Trump aide Peter Navarro has been sentenced to four months in prison by a federal judge after being found guilty of criminal contempt of Congress. Oops. Prosecutors successfully proved that Navarro "chose allegiance to former President Donald Trump over the rule of law" in defying a congressional subpoena and thus is paying the appropriate price. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

Conservatives are blaming a new racist theory for perceived uptick in airline accidents
Stop us if you've heard this one before, but it's Black people's fault. That's right. Those super scary mid-air mishaps you keep hearing about? Totally avoidable if jet manufacturers and airlines would just stick to hiring white people. Isn't it obvious? No? Well, let Republicans spell it out for you. Our "friends on the other side of the aisle™" have gone all in on a baseless, bullshit, racist theory that (inferior) minority groups are benefiting from diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies and being put in charge of airline safety, with disastrous results. "I’m sorry," Turning Point USA chief and sentient cheese curd Charlie Kirk said on his show on Tuesday. "If I see a Black pilot, I’m going to be like, 'Boy, I hope he’s qualified.'" Hot tip: Approximately 2% of commercial airline pilots are Black. But, yeah, it's definitely all their fault.

Bill weakening child labor laws in Florida clears major legislative hurdle
Republicans in Florida advanced legislation "allowing" teenagers to work six days a week, for more than eight hours a day and more than 30 hours a week — all while school is in session, despite uniform opposition from Democrats and rights' advocates who argued the bill would disproportionately impact kids from lower-income and immigrant families. Ron DeSantis, ostensibly back at work as the Sunshine State's governor after an impressively abysmal run for the presidency, is expected to sign the plumb-awful, no-good measure should it reach his desk.

Biden takes decisive action on natural gas projects to fend off carbon "mega bombs"
In a landmark victory for climate activists and people who like Earth and think it's a nice place to raise a family, President Biden hit the brakes on the United States' surging exports of gas, effectively pausing a string of planned projects that have been decried by environmentalists as carbon "mega bombs" that risk pushing the world further towards climate breakdown. Stand by for apoplectic fits and calls for the president to be tarred and feathered by fossil-fuel-soaked Republicans screaming "drill, baby, drill" with all the nuance and pitch of a snack-deprived preschool choir.
WWE's Vince McMahon accused of rape, sex trafficking in graphic lawsuit
In graphic court documents, plaintiff Janel Grant described the "psychological torture and physical violence" she was subjected to by the entertainment wrestling mogul, who first pressured her into a sexual relationship with the promise of professional opportunities after meeting her in March 2019. McMahon allegedly also directed Grant to have sex with WWE wrestlers and staff, intimidated her with threats of revenge porn, and made ongoing "depraved sexual demands" in exchange for her continued employment. This isn't the first time McMahon has been accused of appalling sexual behavior. The wrestling kingpin previously paid more than $12 million to four women over 16 years to hide rampant accusations of sexual misconduct and infidelity. What a guy.

Alabama kills Kenneth Smith in first-ever nitrogen gas execution
Alabama carried out the first-ever execution by nitrogen hypoxia Thursday, killing 58-year-old Kenneth Smith with a scantly tested new method just over a year after he survived a botched lethal injection. Smith "appeared to shake and writhe on the gurney, sometimes pulling on the restraints" for at least two minutes, followed by several minutes of heavy breathing, according to The Associated Press. Rev. Jeff Hood, Smith’s spiritual adviser, described the execution — which the Alabama attorney general's office laughably called "perhaps the most humane method of execution ever devised" — as nothing short of "torture." 2024, y'all.
GOP senator blasts "immoral" Republican colleagues scuttling border deal on behalf of Trump
Senator Thom Tillis blasted his fellow Republican members of Congress for their "immoral," nakedly political play to scuttle a bipartisan negotiated border deal at the behest of the disgraced ex-president for fear of "handing" President Biden an election-year victory. When the Republican Party kicks and screams about supposedly intractable problems and disingenuously cries about all the ways in which Democrats fall short, remember this is always their default move. Obstruct, blame, repeat. Power is all. Progress is irrelevant.
Serial liar Trump takes serious legal risk on stand in New York defamation trial
The disgraced ex-president — who has already been found to have defamed E. Jean Carroll for comments he made about her in 2019 — was under strict rules on what he could say in a New York courtroom, but he dragged himself before the jury anyway and declared that he stood "100%" by a deposition given in 2022 in which he denied Carroll's credible sexual assault allegations and called her a "whack job." Friendly reminder: a related civil trial last year found that Trump did, in fact, sexually assault Carroll in a New York department store in the 1990s and was order to pay her roughly $5 million in damages. The jury also found the serially indicted sex pest liable for defamation for calling her accusations a lie. Closing arguments will take place on Friday and a ruling could swiftly follow.
