Dear John
Revd Amanda Mallen, a new trustee of Church Action on Poverty, recently shared these thoughts about the upcoming General Election:
"We need to tackle the poverty issue because it’s huge, and the things that go along with it... I’m not expecting politicians to work miracles but acknowledging the problem would be a start. Acknowledge that even if you are working, you are still in levels of poverty that are quite extreme and detrimental. Parties need to tell us what they think is possible. Then I would be more likely to vote for them.
“As someone who has lived with that, and through that, I cannot in all honesty sit there and take them seriously if they turn up in fancy suits and flash cars and say they understand. They don’t! Don’t patronise us. We are not thick, we just don’t have a lot of money.”Please write to your MP and ask what they intend to do about poverty
This week, the Joseph Rowntree Foundation released a new report showing that six million of the poorest people – those living in very deep poverty – are receiving less than half the income they need, if they are to escape poverty. Now, more than ever, something has to change so that everyone in our communities can live a fulfilling life.
Church Action on Poverty is working for that change by being part of the Let’s End Poverty grassroots campaign this year. I know that you want to be part of that change too, John. Here's one thing you can do this week to join in with a growing movement to end poverty in the UK:
Write to your MP
We want every MP to hear from their constituents that tackling poverty matters to their community. Join us in taking the first step.
Send your MP an email or a postcard asking them to set out how they plan to take action to tackle poverty in the UK, ahead of the General Election.
There are two ways you can get involved:
Email your MP: Head over to the Let’s End Poverty website to personalise our template email, and send it to your MP.
Send postcards as a group: The more people in their constituency that your MP hears from, the better. Could you get a group together to send postcards to your MP? Order postcards on the website, and then get together as a group to personalise your messages and post them to your MP.
