Dear John,

Today is World Water Day, a day to celebrate water, raise awareness of its many values and take action to tackle the global water crisis where demand is outpacing clean supplies in many areas and 2.2 billion people don’t have access to safe drinking water.

As climate change, population growth, and pollution increasingly threaten water availability and water quality around the globe, we’re very excited to announce a major new effort to catalyze influential capital market leaders to address the financial risks of the water crisis—and call on companies to take action.

At the core of this work, the Valuing Water Finance Task Force aims to raise awareness within the capital markets of the widespread negative impacts of corporate practices on water supplies. The global Task Force includes leading institutional investors and banks including, California State Controller Betty T. Yee, California State Teachers Retirement System (CalSTRS), New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli and New York State Common Retirement Fund, New York City Comptroller Scott M. Stringer, Sweden’s Sjunde AP-fonden (AP7), and Sweden’s Skandinaviska Enskilda Banken (SEB).
Betty Yee quote
Today’s effort was launched in partnership with the Government of the Netherlands, which leads the Valuing Water Initiative . Launched in January 2019, the Initiative aims to demonstrate the implementation of the Valuing Water Principles, developed under the United Nations and World Bank High-Level Panel on Water to bring systemic change in the way water is valued in decision-making.

The Valuing Water Finance Task Force will help accelerate investor action to support this global water initiative by working with Ceres and other stakeholders to develop a set of clear action steps companies in key sectors can take to improve water stewardship.

We’ll keep you updated as we accelerate investor and corporate action to safeguard the world’s most precious resource: water.
Happy World Water Day,
