A HUGE Win for Domestic Workers' Rights in New Jersey

The New Jersey Domestic Workers’ Bill of Rights was signed into law by New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy!

This new law ensures domestic workers in the state have access to:

👉🏽 Protection against discrimination, harassment, and retaliation
👉🏽 Paid breaks and meal times
👉🏽 Written contracts between domestic workers and employers
👉🏽 Provisions for enforcing domestic worker rights
👉🏽 Education for workers and employers about the new law
👉🏽 Advance notice of termination and other protections for live-in workers, including privacy and anti-trafficking safeguards

This achievement is a testament to the power of grassroots advocacy and the belief that change is possible. New Jersey now joins 10 other states, including California, Connecticut, New York, and Massachusetts, in extending protections to domestic workers.

Take a moment to thank Governor Murphy and the bill's sponsors, Assemblymember Britnee Timberlake and Senator Richard Codey, who supported the New Jersey Domestic Workers' Bill of Rights.

Domestic Workers at Sundance

The screening of 'Igualada' was a much anticipated highlight of the 2024 Sundance Film Festival. This powerful documentary traces the inspiring journey of Francia Marquez, Colombia’s Vice President, who, before her ascent into the political arena, was a domestic worker. Her historic role as the first Afro-Colombian woman to become Vice President is a narrative of hope and transformation for future leaders.

Ahead of the screening, Ai-jen Poo, NDWA Founder and President, participated in a panel discussion , “From Policy to Pop Culture: Domestic Workers Own Their Stories,” featuring Juan Mejia Botero (film director of the documentary ‘Igualada ’}, along with Sindy Sanchez { Home Care Worker and NDWA Member } , Greg Kelley { President for SEIU Healthcare Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, & Kansas }, and moderated by Paola Mendoza , (executive producer of ‘Igualada’ }.

The panel discussed the importance of elevating domestic worker voices in our culture and entertainment and how it translates to meaningful policy changes that improve their livelihoods . As part of the discussion, NDWA announced its year-long project, ‘ Spotlighting Domestic Workers: A Roadmap for Film and TV [[link removed]] ,’ which is a set of resources that creatives can use to support them in telling bold, new, and representative stories of domestic workers.

The emphasis on storytelling in the domestic worker movement is crucial for policy change and pivotal in shaping perceptions of domestic workers in pop culture and entertainment.
