That's me! I'm standing next to the bust of my great-great-grandfather, Robert Smalls.

This was taken a while ago (yes, believe it or not, I had hair at one point) but this memory sticks with me today. Before I tell you more about this, can I ask you to chip in to our campaign here in South Carolina's 1st District? This race will be close and every dollar helps.

Robert Smalls' story stuck with my family and became a true north for us. From escaping the Confederacy and freeing slaves, to then traveling back to South Carolina and becoming a Congressman – his story is one of determination and grit.

It taught me from a young age that I could do anything I set my mind to, even if it meant overcoming barriers in the process.

And when I decided to run for Congress here in SC-01, I looked to the grit and determination that Robert passed down to me. It's what keeps me fighting for our best days.

Public service is in my blood, and I'm ready to step up and be a champion for folks across our district. After all, my opponent Nancy Mace has shown that she's only interested in our state when it comes time for her to be on the ballot.
