News from Congressman Bill Foster

Dear Friend,
This past Monday marked 51 years since Roe v. Wade was decided, establishing a constitutionally protected right to an abortion. Since the Supreme Court overturned Roe in 2022, this anniversary is now a sore reminder that millions of women across the nation are denied access to safe abortion care, and the right to make personal and private health care decisions. Image
I’m proud that Illinois has already codified Roe into law and preserved access to safe abortion care for generations to come. I’m also grateful that the Biden Administration took action this week to protect access to medication abortion, contraception, and emergency reproductive medical care.
But make no mistake: far-right Republicans in Congress remain intent on passing a nationwide abortion ban that would override state laws like in Illinois. That’s why I’m committed to passing legislation supported by an overwhelming majority of Americans to codify Roe’s protections and other reproductive health freedoms on a national scale.

I’ve been proud to continuously vote for the Women’s Health Protection Act, which would enshrine access to safe abortion care and reproductive health care into federal law. I was also proud to vote for the Right to Contraception Act, which would place the right to access and use contraception into federal law. While these vital pieces of legislation have yet to come up for a vote again in the Republican-controlled House, my Democratic colleagues and I won’t stop fighting to defend women’s bodily autonomy and the right for every American to access reproductive health care.

Sincerely,

Member of Congress
